In this course you’ll learn to play some simple basslines that use the open G-string and two notes found within the first few frets: the A at the second fret and the B at the fourth. This course also includes exercises that combine these new notes with some of the others that have been covered on the lower strings.

This course is 30 MINUTES long and contains the following videos, each of which can be selected from the video player above:
This short video will introduce you to two notes on the G-string. Along with the open G, these notes will then be put to use in a simple bassline.
This exercise makes extensive use of eighth note rhythms as well as the three new notes. When playing on the top string, be sure to mute all of the lower strings.
This line also combines the three new notes with some eighth note rhythms. Be sure to allow quarter notes to ring for their full duration here.
This exercise features more eighth notes, but also some half note rests. It’s a good idea to use these rests as an opportunity to look ahead to the next bar.
This exercise is unusual as each bar starts with an eighth note rest. Count this carefully and ensure that you begin playing on the ‘and’ of beat one.
This bassline begins on the open E-string and gradually ascends through most of the notes that have been covered so far in this beginner course.
This exercise is a very basic octave line: in the first and third bars you’ll be playing the A and B notes on both the A and G-strings. Octaves will be covered in more detail later.
This exercise is a little busier, but you should note that the first two bars are exactly the same. Spotting repetition like this is a key part of reading music.
This exercise is another that makes use of basic octave figures. Watch out for the beats that begin with an eighth note rest and remember to come in on the ‘and’.
This exercise is a little more challenging and features all of the notes that have been covered so far in this Beginner Bass course.
