Stevie Wonder – ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’

Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours’ is a classic Stevie Wonder track, recorded on the Motown label back in 1970. It reached the top spot on the US R&B chart when released and continues to be enormously popular.

This track features Motown bassist Bob Babbitt, who worked alongside James Jamerson at the label. Bob’s bassline on the song fits the piece perfectly, playing a supportive role throughout. There are some challenging fills to get your fingers around however, making this a great line to study.

1. ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours’

This is a demonstration of the bassline, performed on a Fender Precision, strung with flatwounds. Foam was inserted beneath the strings to further dampen the tone.

2. Intro

This lesson covers the intro, which features a simple two-bar descending riff that is reused at various points throughout the song.

3. 1st and 2nd Verses

This video covers the first two verse sections. This bassline is great fun to play and is reused with variations for the subsequent verses.

4. Chorus

This video will show you how to play the bassline from the chorus. This ascending line creates some interesting chord inversions which work perfectly.

5. 4th Verse

This section features some great bass fills from Bob Babbitt. These lines are classic Motown bass licks and are certainly worth studying.
