When learning to play a mode all over the fingerboard, it’s also important to put it to use in some actual lines, so that you can hear it in action. This piece – which is based on the F Lydian mode – will enable you to become comfortable with using the mode, whilst giving your fingers a good workout at the same time!

In this video I’ll be talking about the F Lydian mode, focusing on its distinguishing features and discussing which chord to play it with.
In this video we’ll be working through the opening section of this piece. The bass plays a chordal part in the upper register here, very clearly outlining the overall tonality of the Lydian mode. This lesson covers bars 1-2.
This lesson covers the B section, which is a fingerstyle groove built around the F Lydian mode. You’ll notice that the B – the raised fourth – features heavily in this line. This lesson covers bars 3-7.
The C section of this piece is a slap and pop line that once again uses the F Lydian mode. This line requires only a basic level of slap technique but is quite challenging to play cleanly. This lesson covers bars 8-15.
