Level 42 – ‘Sandstorm’

'Sandstorm' is the opening track on the first album that Level 42 recorded - The Early Tapes. This is one of the band's best-known instrumental pieces and was a key part of their live set during their formative years. Written by Mark King and Wally Badarou, the track features some classic Mark King grooves, which have made it a very popular piece with bass players over the years. This tutorial will demonstrate how to play the three main sections of the live version of the track.

1. 'Sandstorm'

This video is a full demonstration of the three main sections of 'Sandstorm', performed on a JayDee Supernatural Series 3 bass.

2. A Section (Part 1)

This video covers the first two bars of this section of the track – these bars establish the main slap bass groove. This lesson covers bars 1-2 in the transcription.

3. A Section (Part 2)

This lesson covers the remainder of the A section, which is based on the opening bars, but with a number of variations. This lesson covers bars 3-8.

4. B Section

In this video we'll be working through the hyperactive slap groove that is playing during the B section of this track. This lesson covers bars 9-14.

5. C Section

This video will demonstrate the six-bar turnaround section at letter C. This lesson covers bars 15-20 in the accompanying transcription.
