This great song appeared on Emergency on Planet Earth, the band’s debut album, and the world’s first introduction to the bass work of a young Stuart Zender. This is one of the more complex basslines on the album: it’s busy, heavily syncopated, and there are many variations on the main themes. In short, there’s a lot of bass goodness to get your teeth into here.

This course contains the following videos, each of which can be selected from the video player above:
This video is a full performance of Stuart Zender’s bassline from ‘If I Like It, I Do It’. The track was performed on a Zon Sonus bass, strung with Rotosound strings (.040, .060, .080, .100). I favoured the neck pickup slightly for a more ‘woody’ tone, and the EQ controls were set flat.
In this video I’ll be briefly talking about the song and describing the tone that I used. I’ll also be offering some advice on how you can achieve a similar tone.
In this video we’ll be working through the Intro section of the track, which is built on Stuart Zender’s melodic but supportive bass part. This lesson covers bars 1 – 12.
In this lesson I’ll be working through the first Verse sections of the track in detail. These sections consist of a four-bar chord sequence, which is played four times in each Verse. The bassline here is heavily syncopated, but locks in beautifully with the drum pattern. This video covers bars 13 – 28.
In this lesson we’ll be working through the first Chorus of the track in detail. This section features a very busy bass groove that’s great fun to play. This lesson covers bars 29 – 36.
This lesson covers the second Chorus, which follows the second Verse. Based on the first Chorus, there are many variations to consider here. This lesson covers bars 53-60.
This lesson covers the first Chorus following the Breakdown section. Again, there are many variations to be found here, all of which are worth studying. This lesson covers bars 69-76.
