Fingerstyle Study #2

This challenging study piece was written as a resource for working on up-tempo fingerstyle funk grooves similar to those played by bassists such as Jaco Pastorius and Rocco Prestia. In addition to these complex fingerstyle lines, the piece also includes unison sections and chordal parts.

1. Fingerstyle Study #2

This video is a demonstration of the piece, performed on Mayones Viking bass strung with stainless steel Rotosound strings.

2. Course Overview

This video gives a brief overview of this difficult piece and the technical challenges that it presents. Advice is also given on achieving a suitable tone.

3. A Section

This video covers the intro section. The bass plays a simple melodic line here, with sustained bass notes ringing underneath. This lesson covers bars 1-11.

4. B Section

This video covers the second part of the intro. In this section, the bass plays a tricky upper register melodic line with the keyboards. This lesson covers bars 12-17.

5. C Section

This lesson demonstrates the main bass groove, a challenging fingerstyle line that is peppered with ghost notes. This lesson covers bars 18-23 in the transcription.

6. D Section (Part 1)

This lesson covers the main melody section, which is underpinned by the bass groove that was established in the previous section. This lesson covers bars 24-31.

7. D Section (Part 2)

This lesson covers the second half of the melody section, covering the chord changes and a new bass groove. This lesson covers bars 32-43 in the transcription.

8. E Section

The bassline continues in the same vein in this section, although with some new variations and fills. This lesson covers bars 44-62 in the accompanying transcription.
