One of the most common uses of sixteenth notes is to combine them with eighth notes. This lesson will demonstrate two common rhythms that do this.
This exercise is a rock groove that is built from continuous sixteenth notes. It may look and sound daunting at first, but it’s not as difficult as you might think.
This exercise uses the first combination of eighth notes and sixteenth notes that were covered earlier. This rhythm is sometimes referred to as a ‘gallop’ rhythm.
This exercise uses the second combination of eighth notes and sixteenth notes: two sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note.
This exercise takes the second combination and uses it in conjunction with some other, simpler rhythms that you’ll already be familiar with.
This is a challenging exercise that uses several different rhythms. It also uses the blues scale in bars 1 and 3. This scale is covered in the Scales and Arpeggios section.
