The previous eleven courses have covered a significant number of notes on the fingerboard and put them all to use in a series of simple basslines. In this video course an important new rhythm is added into the mix, one that is commonly used by bass players regardless of what style they play. With a new rhythm to work with, you’ll be able to play lines that are more varied.

This video will examine the effect that adding a dot to a quarter note has. You’ll also learn a simple bassline that perfectly illustrates this new rhythm.
This is a very simple application of this new rhythm. As you’ll hear, it works really well for simple, slow-tempo lines such as this one.
This exercise uses the new rhythm as part of a rock riff. Again, you’ll hear that this rhythm is very effective for basslines of this nature.
Here’s another rock bassline that makes use of the dotted quarter note rhythm. Watch out for the long fill that descends across all four strings in bar 4.
In this exercise the dotted quarter note and eighth note combination is followed by a rest. This is another popular way to use the rhythm and can be very effective.
This video features the new rhythm used in the context of a funk groove. The figure in bars 1 and 3 is often used in funk/soul/R&B basslines.
