Harmonics Study

This study piece was written as a resource for developing the use of harmonics on the bass. Throughout this piece, we’ll be playing lines that combine open strings with natural harmonics, as well as melody lines that include combinations of fretted bass notes and harmonics. We’ll also be looking at some ways in which we can play artificial harmonics.

1. Advanced Level - Harmonics Study

This video is a full demonstration of the piece, performed on a GB Guitars Rumour bass, strung with stainless steel Rotosound strings.

2. Course Overview

This video gives a brief overview of this difficult piece and the technical challenges that it presents. I’ll also be offering advice on finding a suitable tone.

3. A Section

During the intro, harmonics are played within the first few frets of the bass, something that is very challenging to do. This lesson covers bars 1-8 in the transcription.

4. B Section

This section combines harmonics with fretted bass notes and a simple melody line. There are also some artificial harmonics. This lesson covers bars 9-16.

5. C Section

This part is based on the intro but includes more fretted notes in the upper register. This lesson covers bars 17-24 in the accompanying transcription.

6. F Section

This middle section of the piece features an ascending sequence that is topped with more artificial harmonics. This lesson covers bars 41-48 in the transcription.
